The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is reaching out to homeowners in area to provide mortgage assistance. The Attorney General’s Office offers free foreclosure prevention assistance, counseling, and resources to homeowners in Illinois.  The Attorney General's office provides assistance through their Homeowner Help Line Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at 1-866-544-7151 (voice/TTY) and publishes a variety of mortgage-related materials(linked below) including the Illinois Mortgage Lending Guide, which contains a wealth of information and resources for homeowners, including a comprehensive list of HUD-certified counseling agencies and legal assistance groups offering free legal assistance.

The Attorney General’s Office also successfully litigated cases against several large mortgage companies including Countrywide and Ameriquest for predatory lending practices, and reached a $25 billion settlement with Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and GMAC/Ally for fraudulent foreclosure and mortgage servicing practices.  The office has filed more than 50 lawsuits against companies accused of violating the Illinois Mortgage Fraud Act and are investigating nearly 200 more companies and individuals.
